1 John 2:28-3:3
Big Idea: Children Of God Can Live Confidently As They Abide In Christ Continually, Hope In Christ’s Coming Assuredly, And Pursue Christlikeness Faithfully
As A Child Of God:
1) You can be confident at Christ’s second coming (2:28-29)
“For whoever is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when He comes in the glory of His father with the holy angels.”
– Mark 8:38
“Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God. ... Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.”
- John 3:3, 5-6
2 Evidences Of Being Born Of God:
1) Abiding in Jesus continually (2:28)
2) Practicing the righteousness of Jesus faithfully (2:29)
2) You can be confident in your belonging (2:29-3:1)
3) You can be confident in who you are becoming (3:2)
“For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known.”
– 1 Corinthians 13:12
“in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed. For this perishable body must put on the imperishable, and this mortal body must put on immortality.”
– 1 Corinthians 15:52-53
“But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body to be like His glorious body, by the power that enables Him even to subject all things to Himself. Therefore, my brothers, whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm thus in the Lord, my beloved.”
– Philippians 3:20-4:1
4) You can be confident in what you are pursuing (3:3)
“As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, ‘You shall be holy, for I am holy.’”
– 1 Peter 1:14-16
“If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory.”
– Colossians 3:1-4
