The Lord Has A Case

Hosea 4:1-6:3

Big Idea: Our Sin Earns God’s Wrath, But God’s Grace Freely Offers Us New Life

The Lord Has A Case:

1) The Indictment: Because of our sin we deserve God’s wrath (4:1-5:15)

“The Lord, The Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but who will by no means clear the guilty …”
- Exodus 34:6

Our Sin:
1) You sin when you turn from the word of God (4:1-6)
2) You sin when you turn from devotion to God (4:7-11)
3) You sin when you turn to worthless idols (4:12-5:7)
4) You sin when you turn to worldly partnerships (5:13-14)

“For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.”
– Romans 1:18

2) Our Defense: Because of God’s grace we can receive new life (5:15-6:3)

“The Lord is not slow to fulfill His promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.”
– 2 Peter 3:9

“but God shows His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since, therefore, we have now been justified by His blood, much more shall we be saved by Him from the wrath of God. For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of His Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by His life. More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.”
– Romans 5:8-11
